Sporty Outdoor Winter Activities in Red Deer

Christmas is just around the corner and you probably have your gifts all purchased, your menus all planned and most everything ready to go.  Now’s a great time to make a short list of outdoor fun for family and friends of all ages to bond over during the holidays.  In Red Deer, you’ll find no end to the many wintery activities perfect for Christmas vacation. These are some of our favourites.

Ok, let’s do this!

Ice Skating at Bower Ponds

Red Deer has many outdoor ice rinks, 77 in fact. All of them make for an enjoyable afternoon of skating, but there’s nothing quite like the experience of ice skating at Bower Ponds.  Take to the ice on a tree lined pond and skate to your heart’s content.  You can rent any equipment you need so come as you are, bundled up, and ready to make some memories.

Snowshoeing at Kerry Wood Nature Centre

Snowshoeing offers a great way to get close to nature during winter and we’re so lucky to have snowshoeing available in Red Deer at the Kerry Wood Nature Centre.  The centre is located in Waskasoo Park where there are things to do all year round including various nature programs, events and learning opportunities.  During winter, the grounds are perfect for snowshoeing, but you don’t need your own equipment.  Everything is available to rent on-site with knowledgeable staff to help you figure out what you’ll need.

Ice Fishing at Sylvan Lake

A short drive from Red Deer is a winter adventure that is exciting and fun – ice fishing at Sylvan Lake.  You can expect to pull fish such as perch, whitefish, and pike from the crystal-clear waters.   No equipment, no problem.  Rent everything you need, including the ice fishing hut for a half-day, full-day or even overnight.

Enjoy all these winter activities in one weekend or spread them throughout the season.

Either way, come stay at one of our Hinton hotels right here

We’ll be back after the holiday season with more great things to do, see and taste in Red Deer, Hinton and Jasper.  Have a safe and happy holiday!
