Exploring Jasper National Park Post 2024 Wildfire

Despite the challenges caused by the 2024 wildfires, Jasper National Park still offers plenty of opportunities for exploration. Though some areas remain closed for recovery and safety, key attractions are open for visitors, making it possible to enjoy the park’s stunning landscapes and outdoor activities.

Highlights of What’s Open

Miette Hot Springs and Surrounding Trails

The scenic Miette Hot Springs, known for being the hottest natural springs in the Canadian Rockies, remains open. Visitors can also explore the nearby Miette Mine Trail and the Sulphur Skyline Trail. The latter is especially popular for its panoramic views of the Fiddle River Valley and surrounding mountains.

Icefields Parkway

The Icefields Parkway, one of the most famous drives in the world, is still accessible. Along this route, visitors can enjoy stunning views of glaciers, valleys, and waterfalls, including the impressive Athabasca Glacier and Tangle Falls. While driving this iconic route, be sure to stop at the various viewpoints and short trails that are open along the way.

Pyramid Lake and Dorothy Lakes Trails

For those seeking a peaceful day of hiking or paddling, Pyramid Lake offers accessible trails and stunning views. The Dorothy Lakes Trails are also available for exploration, offering a quiet escape into nature with fewer crowds.

Highway 16 and Select Campgrounds

Parts of Highway 16 and several campgrounds are still operational, allowing visitors to base themselves close to many open trails and viewpoints. Keep in mind, however, that backcountry areas and many seasonal sites are still closed due to fire damage and ongoing restoration efforts.

Be Prepared for Some Closures

While there is still much to see, certain areas remain off-limits due to fire damage and safety concerns. Parks Canada is working hard to assess and reopen these areas, but visitors should check regularly for updates on closures. Some backcountry areas, seasonal sites, and trails are still undergoing rehabilitation, so it’s important to plan your visit with current information.

Plan Ahead

When planning your trip, be sure to consult the official Parks Canada website  for the latest updates on closures and conditions. Staying informed will help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience while visiting this beautiful park.

By planning carefully and respecting closures, visitors can continue to enjoy the beauty of Jasper National Park while contributing to the park’s recovery efforts.
